OPALTON BOULDER OPAL — QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA
A one-of-one Australian boulder opal from the remote Opalton fields of Western Queensland. Rugged ironstone runs through the piece with natural seams and flashes of opal breaking through the surface.
Selected and cut by Opal Boy in Japan, then set into our heavy, old-school pendant setting — solid 925 sterling silver, thick backed and 100% hand bezel set.
Pendant size: 13mm × 19mm × 5mm
No two stones are the same. Once this one is gone, it's gone.
Sold with or without our 3mm thick 925 sterling silver cable chain.
For decades, Opal Boy has quietly cut and treated Australian opal from his workshop in Japan. Working with small parcels sourced directly through miners, he became known in tight collector circles for unusual cuts and his secretive methods of treating matrix opal — a process involving heat, smoke and days of careful “cooking.”
He retires this year, making these stones part of one of the last parcels to leave his hands.
For this design we took inspiration from old-school charm pendants you'd find in Oaxaca — simple, heavy and made to be worn hard.
Each piece is built from solid 925 silver with a thick, weighty backing. The opal is then 100% hand bezel set into the silver — no glue, no shortcuts.
A deliberately simple setting that lets the stone do the talking and gives the whole piece that heavy, old-world feel we were after.
Due to the rarity of these stones, no resizing is possible.

The stones were beautiful. But there was a problem.
They weren't very Lost Amigo.
Too clean. Too polished. Too precious. Incredible stones, but not quite something I'd want hanging around my neck while smoking a Marlboro Red with the sun disappearing behind the bike.
Then, in Winton, a miner showed me a piece of jet-black opal matrix, broken up with flashes of colour. Rough, strange and completely unlike anything we'd seen.
I asked what it was.
The answer led us to Japan.
More specifically, to a mysterious cutter known simply as Opal Boy.
For decades, Opal Boy has quietly worked with small parcels sourced through Australian miners, cutting for private collectors and experimenting with unusual material that often gets overlooked by the bigger buyers.
He's particularly known in a very small circle for treating matrix opal — using a closely guarded process involving heat, smoke, oil and several days of what was simply described to us as "cooking."
After a fair bit of back and forth, we managed to secure a tiny parcel from his collection: stones from different Australian mining areas, some completely natural, others treated by Opal Boy to turn the host rock deep black and bring the buried colour to life.
No two stones are alike. Some barely show their colour until the light catches them. Others hide flashes of green, blue and fire inside cracks and seams.
They're rough, unpredictable and a little mysterious.
Exactly what we'd travelled halfway across Australia looking for.
Dug from the Australian dirt. Cut and treated in Japan. Made into Lost Amigo.
